How Many Hearts Are in a Deck of Cards?

If you are new to playing cards, there might be many fundamental questions that may arise in your mind before you learn the rules. By getting the answers to some basic questions, you would be able to differentiate between different cards in different suites and how all of the cards are connected to each other in a standard cards deck.

As we all know, there are 52 cards in a typical deck of cards that are further classified into four suits: hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs. These suites consist of 13 cards each, with nine number cards and the remaining four as the king, the queen, the jack, and the ace cards respectively.

So how many hearts are there in a deck of cards? Like the other three suits, which are the clubs, the diamonds, and the spades, the heart’s suit also has exactly 13 cards in a standard cards deck. These include the ace, number cards from two to nine, the king, the queen, and the jack card.

What Does The Heart Symbol Represent?

The symbol of the heart represents the warmth of summer and the spring seasons, with the power of light. The heart is said to be the center of the world and the core of life. In the Tarot game, the heart symbol represents love, knowledge, fertility, life from water, and joy.

What Does The Heart Mean In A Deck Of Cards?

According to the history of playing cards, some historians do not agree on why symbols are used for representing different suits of the cards, including the heart symbol. However, there was a time when the heart symbol was used to represent a class of people, like the warrior class, while the other suites meant other classes.

The Game Of Hearts

Besides Poker and Tarot, a card game known as The Game Of Hearts is also commonly played with the typical 52 card deck. The game is trick-taking as the payers have to avoid the cards instead of keeping them all. The game’s objective is to have the least score when one player reaches 100 points. The players have to avoid heart and spade cards which are of the highest points.

Keeping Your Score In The Game

After playing all your cards, all the players count up their points. Each player receives a penalty point if they have a heart card. Since the queen of spades has the highest value, the player having this card would get a penalty of 13 points straight. Whenever someone reaches a 100 score, the player with the least points wins.

Here is a bonus tip, the player with the jack of diamonds card is always lucky, as he gets to subtract 10 points straight from his current score.
