Global Observer Stratospheric Persistent UAS

The Global Observer is a persistent stratospheric UAV intended for defence and homeland security purposes. The UAS is capable of transporting communications relay and remote sensing payloads for military and commercial clients.

Under the Joint Capability Technology Demonstration (JCTD) programme, AeroVironment developed the Global Observer. The UAS accomplished its first hydrogen-powered flight in January 2011, having completed its maiden flight in August 2010.

Orion Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS)

Orion is a long-endurance UAV designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and communication relay missions by Aurora Flight Sciences. The Orion UAS, designed for the same programme as the Global Observer, has been selected as the preferred choice for the US Air Force’s JCTD programme.

The maiden flight of the Orion UAS occurred in August 2013. It is capable of carrying numerous 2,600-pound payloads, such as a full-motion video electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor. 

And more communication relay equipment, radars, signal intelligence (SIGINT), and wide-area aerial surveillance (WAAS) equipment. Orion’s wing hardpoints are also capable of mounting weapons.

United 40 (Smart Eye 2) UAV

United 40 or Smart Eye 2 is a medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed by ADCOM Systems, a UAE-based corporation. The UAV debuted to the public during the 2011 Dubai Air Show. The first flight occurred in March 2013.

The UAV can conduct near-real-time assessments of conflict and battle damage, ISR, communications relay, border monitoring, and humanitarian aid missions. The wings of the UAV feature a high aspect ratio, resulting in a 120-hour endurance.

The United 40 can transport a 1,000-kilogram payload, which includes two gyro-stabilized platforms, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and terrain and obstacle avoidance sonar. 

Each of the four under-wing pods can accommodate 100 kg. The hybrid propulsion system, consisting of a Rotax 914 engine and an electric motor, allows a maximum speed of 75 km/h to 220 km/h at an altitude of 7,500 meters.

Mq-1 Predator UAS

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems MQ-1 Predator UAS is the most battle-proven unmanned aircraft system in the world. The Italian Air Force, Turkish Air Force, UAE Air Force, and Royal Moroccan Air Force all employ UAS. It was utilized for combat operations in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bosnia, Serbia, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, and Somalia.

The Predator has a 40-hour endurance and is the first armed UAV capable of delivering precise air-to-surface weaponry. It can transport numerous payloads weighing up to 340 kilograms, such as EO/IR video cameras, laser designators, communications relays, SIGINT/ESM systems, Lynx multi-mode all-weather radar, and Hellfire missiles.

The UAS is operated through a C-Band LOS data link and Ku-band SATCOM from the ground control station. The power plant is a significantly modified Rotax 914 turbo engine with a maximum airspeed of 120 knots. The UAS can attain a maximum altitude of 25,000 feet.
