Does Cedar Point Close For Rain? What You Need To Know

A trip to Cedar Point with your friends is a wonderful plan for a day off until the weather decides not to be on your side. If you are visiting on a summer day, you would likely be rained on at Cedar Point. So, does the rain mean the park would be closed?

No, Cedar Point does not close when it rains. Outdoor rides will stay open if the rain is light, but if the rain becomes heavier and/or thunderstorms are on the forecast, outdoor rides will be temporarily closed. They will reopen as the weather permits. So, pack your umbrella and raincoats, and enjoy all that is open in the rainy weather.

Though the rainy weather would not close down Cedar Point, It may alter your experience at the park. Keep reading to find out how it can impact your experience.

How The Rain Affects The Rides

How the rides are affected is determined by the severity of the rain. Cedar Point has a lot of steel, and water and steel coasters are not to be mixed. If the rain is mild, most of the rides will remain open but, if the rain is heavy, you can expect that the rides would be closed. The covered rides and shows, however, do remain open when it rains.

Roller coasters and high rides are the most at risk of being damaged. Hence, they are the first to close on a raincheck, but  Cedar Point makes every attempt to reopen the rides as soon and safely as possible after the inclement weather has passed.

Rides With High Altitudes

You may not have to get a rain check on your entire trip, but the weather does affect the operation of the rides. If there are light showers of rain, most rides stay open and working but if there is heavy rain and thunderstorms the rides, especially the ones that reach high up are closed down for safety purposes.

You can not enjoy the rides that are towering in the sky in rainy and windy weather. So, the following rides remain closed in drizzly weather:

  • GateKeeperGemini
  • Giant Wheel,
  • Magnum XL-200,
  • Rougarou,
  • Maverick,
  •  maXair,
  • Millennium Force,
  • Power Tower,
  • Raptor Prof. Delbert’s Frontier Fling,
  •  Sky Ride

Rides That Are Closed In Any Rain

The rides that are not that high and are covered are usually open for people to enjoy on a rainy day. You might not want to visit Cedar Park for these on a rainy day if these are the rides you look forward to most.

The following rides are closed in rain showers:

  • 4 x 4’s,
  • Gemini,
  • Giant Wheel,
  • Peanuts Road Rally,
  • Pipe Scream,
  • Race Park,
  • Snoopy Bounce,
  • Top Thrill Dragster,
  • Woodstock Express.

Despite these closed rides, many rides and sections are open to visitors.

Open Sections

As long as there is not a heavy storm or lightning and thunder, the following areas are available to be enjoyed in the rainy weather at Cedar Point;

The rides in the inner sections are open and safe to ride. The rides in the Kitty Kingdom section remain operational and are safe. You can enjoy a ride in the carousel even when the showers continue.

Not only does the Kitty Kingdom stay open but the Camp Snoopy section at the back end stays open on rainy days as well. Though the character does not come out in the park as they usually do, the character show still goes on so you can watch your favorite characters at the show. The same goes for Planet Snoopy, the rides here stay open, and the Snoopy Theatre show is run.

The Jack Aldrich Theatre is something you can check out on a rainy day, as it is an indoor show. It is a music, rhythm and dance theme show that is very entertaining and you can enjoy it in any weather. Similar to that is the Palace Theatre show which is also an indoor show that you can see.

Shopping is another fun thing you can do if it starts raining outside. There are many merchandise stores at Cedar Point that can be visited, like the general store in Frontierland which is a country-themed store with unique merchandise.

The barnyard and horse rides are also open during rain showers. You can look at the animals, pet them or buy the feed and feed it to them. There are cows, sheep, llamas, alpacas, etc.

Coming Prepared On A Rainy Day

Keep in mind that to see most of the outdoor shows while it’s raining, you would be standing under the open sky, so it is important to bring all your necessities. Keep an umbrella and raincoat with you to keep yourself protected.

Be sure to wear boots that provide extra friction to avoid slipping in the rain and if you have children with you make sure they are covered and well-protected from the rain.

Refund policy

Rain is one of the few uncontrollable factors that might ruin a theme park visit. Unfortunately, Cedar Point does not offer refunds/rain checks if your visit is impacted by severe weather.

What Is The Best Time To Visit Cedar Point

The months of September and October are ideal for going to Cedar Point. In September, the park is only open on weekends and Sundays are the least crowded days.

The appeal of October at Cedar Point is its HalloWeekends. The event usually draws big crowds on weekends throughout the month, so if you have to go during this time, Sundays are again the least crowded days.

Conclusion

Cedar Point does not close on rainy days. Some rides do stay closed due to bad weather, specifically rain, high winds, and/or lightning.

It is hard to provide a specific answer as to which rides close or remain open because different degrees of severe weather have varied effects on different rides.

In severe winds and thunderstorms, the park does close down until it is safe to reopen. There are no refunds or rain checks offered by Cedar Point in those cases.
